A myth tells us: Two methods of improving a business are “Six Sigma” and “Lean”...
We do encounter globally operating companies that claim for having sustainable operations in place but critically exposed to the risk of catastrophic impacts of rare events multiplied by a baseline behavioural attitude of unpreparedness...
Particularly where performance indicators already established and “tangible” – e.g. resources, carbon, safety, security, extreme violations, disasters etc – companies as an exercise may distinguish between occurrence of normal distributed events and high impact rare events: Continuous improvement via performance indicators towards perfectness, may spread the perfect ground for the birth of a Black Swan and entrap us by the next Improbable.
