New Mexico Intermodal Yard

Construction is under way on a major intermodal yard and locomotive refueling complex for Union Pacific Railroad at Santa Teresa, N.M., just inside the state border west of El Paso, Texas.

UP finalized plans in April to build that $400 million facility, after New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez signed a state law that exempts UP from paying state fuel taxes.

It will have an annual intermodal lift capacity of 250,000 containers or trailers, and connect with UP’s east-west main line going to southern California ports as well as north-south traffic from Mexico.
